Gemini’s Skills are bookmarks for your AI prompts

Google has announced an exciting new feature for Chrome users that enhances their interaction with AI through a system called Skills. This feature, similar to the bookmarks found in web browsers, allows users to save and organize prompts for future use when utilizing the Gemini AI within the Chrome browser.

With the introduction of Skills, users can create a prompt, save it as a Skill, and easily retrieve it later. This functionality is designed to streamline the process of engaging with AI, making it more intuitive and user-friendly. Starting today, Google has begun rolling out the Skills feature to Chrome on desktop, marking a significant step in integrating AI into everyday browsing.

Here’s how the Skills feature operates: When a user writes a prompt using Gemini, they have the option to save it as a Skill. These Skills are stored on a dedicated page within Chrome, where users can access both their own saved Skills and a selection of Google-suggested Skills. To use a saved Skill, users simply need to open the Gemini interface in Chrome, type a forward slash ("/"), and a menu will appear listing the available Skills. By selecting a Skill from the drop-down menu, Gemini will execute the prompt accordingly.

Among the Skills that Google recommends are various practical applications such as “What’s in this?” designed for meal preparation and planning, a “Calendar creator,” and a “YouTube transcript” Skill. Additionally, there are motivational Skills like “Hype it up!” which provide encouragement to users. These suggestions reflect Google’s aim to enhance productivity and creativity through the use of AI.

It is important to note that generative AI often produces varied responses based on the same prompt. Google acknowledges this variability, stating, “Like all AI-generated responses, results may vary slightly between runs, similar to how asking someone the same question twice might yield a differently worded answer.” A Google representative also assured that the Skills available in their library have been carefully reviewed for quality and reliability.

As users consider integrating Gemini into their daily routines, they will have to decide whether it meets their needs better than other AI models like ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude. Regardless, the introduction of the “bookmarked” Skills feature leverages Google’s extensive knowledge of web browsing to enhance AI usability. While it may seem like a small addition, it is a practical enhancement that can significantly improve the user experience.
